IB & Postsecondary Grad Rates Student participation and overall degree attainment. Students who participated in an IB program are more likely to graduate with a bachelor’s degree from a 4‐year university than students who did not participate in an IB program. According to the data from NSC, 69% of all IB candidates obtained a bachelor’s degree. This rate is much higher than the rate for the general population of students.
• Degree attainment by level of participation and performance. The percentage of students receiving a bachelor’s degree varies according to the level of participation and the performance of the students in the program. Students who pass at least one IB exam are more likely to receive a bachelor’s degree than those who do not. Of students who attempted but did not pass an IB exam, only 49% received a bachelor’s degree, compared to 74% of the students who passed 3 or more IB exams. Students who received the IB diploma have the highest rates of bachelor’s degree attainment (80%).
• Degree attainment and IB participation in high poverty schools. Within schools serving a high low‐income population, 76% of the IB diploma candidates received a bachelor’s degree from a 4‐year college or university, which is significantly higher than the rate for the overall US student population. (Accessed via IB Organization, 2008. Publisher: National Students Clearinghouse) What our Parents Have to Say About our IB MYP... My son just graduated from 8th grade at PBMS. This school has been a very positive and special experience for us. The teachers and staff are professional, dedicated, enthusiastic and caring. PBMS has a “small school” feel because the teachers and staff know the kids well and take a personal interest in them. The school, the parents and FOPBSS have managed to provide many enriching programs including sports leagues, math field day, various clubs, band and chorus. There is a large group of parents who are really involved and volunteer for everything from campus clean-up and beautification projects to helping the teachers and staff on special projects and field trips. The IB program helps the kids become well-rounded, thoughtful, and responsible citizens of the world. Through the community service requirement, students learn the importance and the rewards of giving back to the community. Principal Julie Martel has fostered a firm but encouraging atmosphere where kids feel safe and nurtured. We are really glad to have had the PBMS experience and are looking forward to more great experiences at Mission Bay High School. -Marcie Beckett, 2009 parent Thank you for a wonderful 3 years at PBMS. We have had a fantastic 3 years of academics with truly amazing teachers. Each year I find a few special teachers and think Mac is so lucky to have them and then the following year I find even more teachers that go above and beyond. Each year they keep in contact with me and are willing to go the extra mile to make sure Mac is succeeding. I will truly miss these amazing teachers. The administration is also amazing and so involved. I have enjoyed every minute at PBMS and am very sad to say good-bye. I will be back in a few years, but now I am off to MBHS to make a difference there! PBMS has been beautified beyond belief and I did find two great moms to take over the family night beautification fund so it will continue to improve. -Cori Meara, 2009 parent Of course the teachers at PBMS are awesome! Mrs. Haake does such wonderful art works, very vibrant and such thoughtful projects. I enjoyed the displays. Mrs Weinheimer’s class has neat projects as well. The kids are always learning something worthwhile in life ex. earthquakes, sand landforms, sea life… Wish I was there too! "Mr. Sloan is such a fun teacher!" says my daughter, Julie. He has made math a better subject for her. He's a great teacher too. --Linda Farrer, current parent
The creative, challenging & integrated curriculum, well-organized lunch-time & after school athletic program, commitment to the Arts & diverse student population have made for an incredible educational experience for our children. The service component of IB has taught them the value of contributing to their school & community. PBMS Rocks!! -Laura and Brian Daly, current parents
PBMS has provided our daughter, Bridget, with wonderful educational opportunities, both within the classroom and in service to our community. Her teachers at PBMS have been excellent, and especially effective in keeping her always enthusiastic about the learning process. Lastly, and not to be undervalued, attending PBMS has allowed Bridget to continue her education within our PB community, and alongside the same great group of friends that she has grown up with since starting Kindergarten at PB Elementary. -Downie and Karen Beckett, 2009 parents
