COMMUNITY AND SERVICE ASPECT at PBMS PBMS STUDENTS GIVE BACK TO OUR COMMUNITY As Pacific Beach Middle School continues to implement the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme there are exciting changes in the academic requirements. This year Pacific Beach Middle School will focus on encouraging students to become a thoughtful, open-minded and tolerant citizen which is a component of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme currently being implemented. Students are required to participate in Community and Service. For sixth grade students, this requirement is an on-campus task. Seventh and eighth grade students are required to participate in the community by offering their service in organizations outside in the community, as well as doing their part to help out around the PBMS campus. Michelle Irwin, Principal states, “In addition to enhanced academic programs and challenging curriculum, this aspect of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme will provide opportunities for our students to think of others around the country and the world, and offer their help to those in need. We are excited about including this in our curriculum and giving back.” * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * As all students and parents know, this year PBMS has implemented a community service requirement at each grade level. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) Candidate School, we believe students who extend themselves they will become resourceful and responsible citizens who will make positive contributions to our community locally and beyond. The Community Service Requirement is as follows: Grade 6 = 10 Hours of Community Service Grade 7 = 15 Hours of Community Service Grade 8 = 20 Hours of Community Service In order to support our students meet this grade level requirement, we have found a San Diego Guide to Youth Volunteer Opportunities. Please click here to download a pdf of this guide. If you have any questions regarding this requirement, please contact one of your student’s teachers.
