Welcome to our school. Pacific Beach Middle School is a public school, located in Pacific Beach, north of the beautiful San Diego Bay. Our coastal community is home to sandy beaches, marine preserves, popular surf-breaks, Crystal Pier, Mission Bay Park, SeaWorld San Diego, and Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute.

Did you know... We bring the world to our students. SeaWorld, Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute, ReRip.com, and the California State Parks PORTS (tele-conferencing) Project, are our official Partners in Education. 

To celebrate our community and our proximity to the Pacific Ocean, we have unique curricular, community and service focus. Our murals, team names, house structure and Partnerships in Education all support the theme of "International Waters." Our students learn that water is an element that connects all living things. By introducing children to conceptual thinking at an early age, they begin to understand that all learning is connected. The connectivity between subject areas and between content and real-life experiences, represents the International Baccalaureate (IB) philosophy that learning is holistic in nature. Too often students do not experience this understanding until they start their studies at the university. Research shows that students must learn that knowledge, understanding and skills can be transferred between subject areas. 

Did you know... IB Programmes continue to encourage international mindedness in students and educators through the IB learner profile; a set of values that represent our mission and principles.

IB Middle Years Programme students are also taught that communication takes many forms. By learning about communication styles, and being open-minded to learning about new cultures and languages, students begin to develop the international-mindedness and inter-cultural understanding that is required in all three Programmes offered by the International Baccalaureate Organization.

Did you know... To give younger students access to an IB education, in 1994 the IB added the Middle Years Programme (MYP), a curriculum for students aged 11-16.

As a fully-authorized IB World School,  Pacific Beach Middle all students enrolled in our program experience curriculum that is rigorous and relevant while ensuring students have extended time needed to master traditional subject areas. All students have the opportunity to enroll in three full-years of Science integrated with Computer and Design Technology, as well as full-year courses for Social Studies and History integrated with Visual and Performing Arts. We offer a Gifted and Talented Education program as well as Seminar classes for identified students.

Did you know... The PB Middle IB Library is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week through online access to top-of-the line subscription databases and online reference e-books for all PBMS students and families. 

PB Middle teachers attend special training through the International Baccalaureate Organization and bring their new knowledge into the classroom and into our community. While our curriculum includes instruction of the California State Standards, our teaching and learning must exceed local and regional standards by also meeting the international education requirements of the Geneva-based IBO. To continue operating as an International Baccalaureate World School, we must undergo extensive reflection and evaluation of our Middle Years Programme based on research and the latest strategies from around the globe. This includes providing access to resources from multiple perspectives and languages.

Did you know... In 1968, a group of talented teachers from international schools around the world created the IB Diploma Programme. 

Students who promote from our 8th grade are encouraged to continue their international education by enrolling in an IB Diploma Programme (DP). The IB DP is a comprehensive college preparatory course of study. At the culmination of the Diploma Program, students can earn the IB Diploma by scoring at set levels on all six IB exams, completing the Theory of Knowledge course, completing the Creativity, Action and Service requirements, and completing the rigorous 4000 word IB essay. Top universities recognize the rigor and reliability of the IB scores and actively recruit students who are IB Diploma Candidates.
