NEW IDEAS

Are U.S. educators  trying to catch up or are we leading the way? A VERY different perspective on test scores, and other measurements of educational "success."

When we look at other factors, beyond international math scores, we see that the US continues to be one of the highest scoring country on significant indicators such as democracy, overall wealth, happiness, and innovation and creativity as determined by new patents. The biggest myth is that the US educational system is "behind," while in fact, it's just the opposite according to Dr. Yong Zhou. Hear Dr. Zhou discuss his new book.

We [the US] will never compete based on test-scores. Whatever you do, you give up something else. We can’t have and teach everything. The Chinese and Indians that may score well but there will be other things where they will lose. We should not privilege certain subjects as most valuable knowledge. If we lose passion, courage, and belief in oneself we will lose [globally]. We should not just privilege one type of thinking over another. Every little person and idea should be valued. We cannot predict what profession will be there. The stone age didn’t end because they ran out of stone. It ended because other technologies were discovered. Only diversity of talents can sustain the economy, civilization and the world.

Congrats to Mrs. Oliver, 2008-2009 PB Middle Teacher of the Year. We love you! Here's what your colleagues said:

Kim puts in many after school hours to help kids succeed in school. She's there to answer around the clock questions about any HR/union business, and if she doesn't know the answer, she will call all of her key contacts on the spot to figure out what is really going on.  She is always wiling to help out her coworkers. She has a very positive, upbeat personality, no matter the issue. She is very easy to work with and fun to be around!

Kim Oliver truly understands the importance of addressing the diverse learning styles that exist in a middle school classroom. Through her creative and interactive approach of delivering curriculum, she is able to increase access to content that wouldn't be available for some students in a traditional classroom model. As evidenced by the energy of her classroom, students clearly enjoy learning math via games, hands-on activities, and innovative Smartboard lessons. Nice work Kim!

She is so easy to work with.  The students enjoy learning in her class.  She is always up for working on an interdisciplinary unit.  She is funny.  She puts in the hard work and dedication for her students.

She is an awesome teacher that uses countless alternative approaches to facilitate learning in her room. She is an outstanding union representitve,
but most of all she is a great sense of humor, which gives her an edge in her ability to relate to and connect to her students.
