MISSION BEACH WOMAN’S CLUB SELECTS
MISSION BAY HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC PROGRAM
FOR 2008 FUNDRAISER BENEFICIARY

Mission Beach Woman’s Club has announced their beneficiary for their 2008 fundraiser will be the Mission Bay High School’s (MBHS) music program.  The MBHS music program was reinstated just one year ago after a long hiatus.  The Mission Beach Woman’s Club recognized this new program required substantial private funding to provide instruments in order to maximize the benefits of music for participating MBHS students.   This year’s event will be held on Saturday, March 29 from 3:00-6:00PM at The Pennant (2893 Mission Blvd) in South Mission Beach and is open to the public.

States Pam Deitz, MBHS Band Boosters, “Mission Beach Woman’s Club has guaranteed the MBHS music program $10,000 which is an unprecedented one time donation towards supporting music in our community.  We are so grateful for their support!  Additionally, they have set an excellent example of how our community can work together to make the beach area a better place to live.”

The MBHS music program is a true success story directed by JP Balmat who is alumni of MBHS and former member of the MBHS Dixie Jazz Band.  “This is my dream job”, states Balmat.  Balmat also attended Kate Sessions Elementary and Pacific Beach Middle School.  Balmat went on to SDSU where he majored in Music Education and graduated in Spring 2006

Enrollment in the MBHS music program has exceeded expectations.  This year MBHS offers Beginning Band class for students who have never picked up an instrument, Concert Band where the Beginning Band students will move into and a Jazz Band class which is traditional Dixie Band with modern and jazz influences.  The award winning MBHS Dixie Jazz Band will participate in their second year at the prestigious Sacramento Jazz Jubilee in May 2008.

For more information on the 2008 Mission Beach Woman’s Club fundraiser or to make a donation for the silent auction see www.mbwcinfo.com.   The MBWC is located at 840 Santa Clara Place in Mission Beach and is a 501(c)3 non profit organization dedicated to community service, literacy, and community issues.  All donations are 100% tax deductible.

Pacific Beach Middle School
Fights the Childhood Obesity Epidemic

Squaredancing, Stomp, cup stacking and juggling?  If that doesn’t interest you, how about some ultimate frisbee, disc golf and multicultural dancing?  These days, most teenagers require new creative approaches to pull them away from electronic devices and improve coordination and physical fitness.  And PE teachers Dennis Gildehaus, Jill Schenk and Karla Martinez of Pacific Beach Middle School are on the cutting edge of new techniques which interest teens today.

Due to funding constraints, most middle schools in the San Diego Unified School District do not offer athletic programs.  This comes at a particularly unfortunate time when childhood obesity and diabetes have reached epidemic levels.  The severity of this issue was brought to light in Shaquille O’Neal program “Shaq’s Big Challenge.”  The goal of Shaq's show is to cast light on the looming health crisis among America's children. They risk becoming the first generation of kids to die at a younger age than their parents — from preventable, weight-related causes. The annual National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that about one-third of U.S. children are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight.  Teacher Dennis Gildehaus says, “Students today lead sedentary lives which contributes to numerous health problems.”  However, according to Gildehaus, “PB Middle School is working to provide a model program for other schools to incorporate exciting new extracurricular athletic programs.”

Pacific Beach Middle School has one of the best physical education programs in the city, and is the only middle school in the San Diego Unified School District that has a comprehensive intramural program.  The intramural program offers flag football, futsal, soccer and baseball during the lunchtime break.  After school programs consist of flag football, soccer, track, basketball, futsal, field hockey, Leave a Legacy Club, and the Surf Club.  PB Middle also hosts the district-wide basketball, flag football and soccer tournaments where up to fifteen other schools participate, depending on the sport.  Keeping teens active following a day in the classroom is often when PE teachers are needed most, therefore programs after school are critical.

Many of the activities which PB Middle offers involve team-building exercises, which instill a cohesive, supportive environment for the students.  The school offers trendy activities which interest teens such as “Dance, Dance Revolution”, stationary bikes and waveboarding.  PB Middle recently was awarded a grant from the San Diego Chargers to enhance the physical education program to include new equipment which will interest teens.

PB Middle’s high-energy teacher Jill Schenk led a group of students at last year’s Holiday Parade which won the community spirit award as they marched to “Gonna Make You Sweat” and performed their Superstar Dance Routine.

Ms. Schenk also leads the Leave a Legacy Club which has made significant improvements to the school’s exterior with their colorful themed murals.  Motivational messages such as “Together Everyone Achieves More!” and “Attitude is Everything!” have been painted around campus and at the field of the PB Recreation Center, which have improved upon the school tremendously.  Many of the murals focus on the values outlined in the Character Counts Program such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.  Surrounding the students with positive words and reinforcing the daily application of these values has helped make PB Middle School a wonderful campus environment.

Incorporating International Studies into their program brings in the education of various nationalities and their folk-dancing styles, thus building upon their knowledge and appreciation of various cultures while improving fitness and coordination.  This component complements the new International Baccalaureate Programme which was recently accredited at PB Middle School.  The creativity and enthusiasm of PB Middle teachers has become contagious and has spilled over to the entire school.

The activity doesn’t stop at PB Middle School.  On October 20th, PB Middle hosted the SD Unified School District flag football carnival.  On November 3rd PB Middle hosted the girls’ district’s futsal tournament.  The school will also be hosting a CAHPERD conference (California Association of Health and Physical Education Recreation and Dance) on October 27th.  The conference is offered to professional PE teachers and students looking forward to becoming PE teachers.  Ms. Martinez serves as the CAHPERD President, Mr. Gildehaus serves as the Newsletter and Website Coordinator/Editor and Jill Schenk serves as the Regional Representative.  How do these teachers have the time to do all of these things?  They lead very ACTIVE lives!

ME GENERATION? THINK AGAIN:
MIDDLE SCHOOLERS GIVE BACK WITH OVER 11,300 HOURS OF SERVICE

Pacific Beach Middle School students provide respite care, help farm workers and buy farm animals for impoverished families.

This year Pacific Beach Middle School's (PBMS) 6th to 8th graders completed over 11,000 hours of community service. In her promotion speech, PBMS 8th grader Michaela Cervantes asserts that over 11,000 hours of service proves today’s teens do not deserve the title of the “me generation.” They care about our world and are working hard to make a difference. As part of their commitment to becoming an International Baccalaureate School , PBMS students are encouraged to help throughout Pacific Beach, surrounding communities, and even internationally. "The amazing community service achievements were shared
by the 8th graders during their grade exhibition and academic portfolio presentations,” said Jenny Sims, IB Coordinator.  "I had goose bumps as I
sat and listened to one of our students explain how he provides respite care for a neighbor's child,  who has Cerebral Palsy. He said he knew
the parents rarely have breaks and he wanted to help," added Sims.

Another 8th grader heard of the devastating effects of the citrus freeze on California’s farm-workers. He not only participated in the project, but coordinated
the entire Cesar Chavez Campaign at PBMS. He gathered a group of concerned friends who created posters and handed out information, as
well as collected money and food to send to Helen Chavez, the grand-daughter of Cesar Chavez.

PBMS has many military families. In response to continued deployments, Builders Club students wrote letters and sent care packages to troops in Iraq.
“My Marines and I really enjoyed your care package. It was great to see that even at your age you guys are great citizens and very patriotic,” wrote Sgt. Jesus R. Kamber in his thank you letter to students.

Supported by their English teachers, Bob Swigart and David Stark, approximately 200 students took part in a program called Read-to-Feed
where students gathered pledges for the amount of books they read. The donations were sent to the Heifer International project that provides
farm animals internationally to an impoverished family for food and income.

PBMS artists left their mark around the campus by volunteering their time to design and paint murals with Jill Schenk, PE Teacher and Advisor to the
Leave A Legacy Club. Participating in campus and beach clean-up, campaigning for the local Invisible Children organization, donating their hair to Locks of Love, and volunteering at local events are just a few more examples of how teenagers at Pacific Beach prove they care. “Pacific Beach is such a great community and the families have been so supportive of our school. It's nice to know that together we can make a difference and give back. The students' community service is our school's  way of saying Thank You," says Carren Lindsay-Dial, English Teacher.
If you want to learn more about our community service opportunities or how you can make a difference, please visit the new PBMS service webpage at

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

As all students and parents know, this year PBMS has implemented a community service requirement at each grade level. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) Candidate School, we believe students who extend themselves they will become resourceful and responsible citizens who will make positive contributions to our community locally and beyond. The Community Service Requirement is as follows:

Grade 6 = 10 Hours of Community Service

Grade 7 = 15 Hours of Community Service

Grade 8 = 20 Hours of Community Service

In order to support our students meet this grade level requirement, we have found a San Diego Guide to Youth Volunteer Opportunities.  Please click here to download a pdf file of this guide.

If you have any questions regarding this requirement, please contact one of your student’s teachers.
